Sabbatical In Review

Monday, May 25, 2026
After five grueling years of labor in the software mines at Notarize, Inc., d.b.a. Proof.com, I was granted a brief respite in the form of a month-long sabbatical. I took off from Wednesday March 4th to Sunday April 5th (inclusive). (Also, I have since left the company for good, but more on that next time.)
My ambitions for this month were moderate:
2.
Write a novel
3.
Travel the world
4.
Experience everything that New York City has to offer
5.
Veg out for a couple days
Here's how I did:
1.
TOTAL FAILURE! I did not run the race. I had to stop training in February due to heel pain and knee pain. I am now doing P.T.. My doctor thinks my tight, lying hips are to blame. Maybe they will be loose and honest enough to run the race next year...
2.
TOTAL FAILURE! I wrote nothing! Not one word. Too much free time, I think, but also not enough.
3.
NEAR-TOTAL FAILURE! I traveled to Utah and then Florida. Not quite the entire world, but who needs that when you have good friends, rocks, stars, and alligators.
4.
NEAR-TOTAL FAILURE! Alas, I did not make it to every museum, event or going-on in the city. But I went to the Frick, Central Park, the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Pretty neat.
5.
SUCCESS! I exhibited extremely vegetable-like behaviors for several days before and after my travels. One day I spent hours upon hours on my computer playing
